Maria Isabel Castro

(Barranquilla, 1955) Disciple of the artists Álvaro Herazo, Guillermo Ardila and Roberto Angulo, she graduated from the School of Art and Decoration of the Universidad Autónoma del Caribe de Barranquilla. A teacher for several years at the same university, she is a follower of the artistic proposals that are lived at that time where she finds the best environments for her artistic work to begin to formalize.

In 1984 the artist traveled to Mexico City and entered the School of Graphic Design of the Universidad Iberoamericana with an emphasis on the knowledge of Art History, and studied Mexican culture. In her continuous visits to museums, Maria Isabel finds a fascination for the monumental works of Mexican muralists. There She made her first large-format canvases capturing in them the cultural baggage impregnated in her memory, without detaching himself from her Caribbean character.

Since 1995 she has been based in Quito, Ecuador. There Maria Isabel teaches university and experiments in Graphic Design focused on visual communication, where she links graphic synthesis with artistic expression. The artist finds the environment, time and space conducive to constant artistic production where one of her topics of interest is the way the light reaches the equinoctial mountains.

Her individual exhibitions have a high degree of maturity in whichs she integrates the plastic arguments that unify her two worldviews: the Caribbean with the Andean way of being. Since then she has constantly strengthened her knowledge in the acrylic technique, participating in the workshop of the master and plastic artist, Antonio Arias, and other artists and art critics who are part of her personal artistic world.
