Coqui Calderón

Coqui Calderón was born in Panama City in 1937. She finished  her higher studies at Rosemont College, Pennsylvania, USA, in 1959, completing a B.A. with specialization in art history and history.

Coqui continues his informal preparation in art at the Grande Chaumiere, the Academie Julián and La Sorbonne in Paris, France. She lived in New York from 1961 to 1967 and in Miami Fl. During the eighties. She currently lives in Panama, in addition to her work as a painter, Coqui dedicated to promoting the arts in her country.

In the Panamanian pictorial panorama, Coqui Calderón marks a prominent space: She paints as a technical task of search and creativity; it evolves complexly in phases always in continuity; and, in an analysis of the human that lasts for four decades, reveals a style representative of her personal experience. She lives a life at the service of pictorial rationality that reflects her walk, in a deep process of internal analysis. Initially figurative, it later becomes abstract, highlighting the domain of composition and a marked interest in movement.

After her stay in Paris and, later, in New York, the movement appears, as a main feature, in her work. From 68 to 80 her activity is in Panama. Later Coqui settled in Miami, where from 85-86, she produced landscapes and still lifes in pastel, and acrylic that, accompanied by her respective sketches on paper, clarify her technical decisions and allow us to perceive the internal structure of her  composition.

In the 85 to 90 parentheses are produced in her subject and Coqui produces a collection of acrylics and pastels that she calls "Protesta '85" and "Vientos de Furia". They are a testimony to the street demonstrations during the crisis in Panama. From the 90s he settled again in Panama where she renewed her agenda on the relationship between nature and human beings. The painful experience of the loss of a daughter opens a dimension and a questioning about human fragility and now of her environment.

"In her latest paintings we see the integration and strength of women before nature, represented in her real environment, intertwined with the muddy and lianas of the humid tropics, the motifs that occupy this artist's thought show the intimate fusion of women and of nature, now in a harmonious interrelation in which the female figure is defined vertically and is the center of interest of a complex composition ".
