Arturo Correa

The Venezuelan-American artist Arturo Correa lived his first 24 years in Venezuela, where he achieved notable success as a young painter. His father was a doctor and his mother a psychologist. In his childhood he witnessed heated debates between them. His father defended the overwhelming preeminence of natural sciences, guided by pragmatic, objective, and rational thoughts. His mother, on the other hand, preferred the subjective mindset, subjected to intuition and apprehensive reasoning. It was the classic conflict in the midst of which nature and upbringing affect human health and behavior.

The consequences of this conflict deeply affected the young painter. Like his parents, whose professions were in the area of health, Arturo soon discovered that his artistic passion leaned, in his own words, towards the need to ‘fix people’. ”

“His flat paintings, devoid of perspectives and horizons that guide the viewer, combine contemporary and historical iconic figures, texts and images collected from the past and the present. Objects appear as floating in the air, arbitrarily positioned as a collage with no reference scales. They seem to approach the absurdities and injustices of life with a certain optimistic cynicism and a mocking and ironic tone. Some objects are painted with surgical precision, others with wild and organic freedom. All refer to Arturo's personal and epiphanic journey through memory and philosophy. If it weren't for the lush coloring of these realistic and expressionist images, his work would certainly resemble an existentialist and gloomy Sturm und Drang. But instead, he prefers to swing with delight between the two extremes. ”

"Considered a respectable artist in the prime of his career, Arturo Correa properly takes the baton and follows the path of postmodernist masters of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, such as Bob Rauschenberg, David Salle, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francesco Gracious. A genuinely bicultural artist who has spent the same number of years immersed in the culture of Venezuela and that of the United States, Correa builds bridges and integrates the aesthetics and philosophy of both countries. His personal vision, his intention, is indeed to "fix people", communicating visually a new awareness of the everyday world around us. “
